Do you know what a carrot flower looks like?

So… how many of us know what a carrot flower looks like? If you grow your own veges, do you harvest them all and re-sow from a packet? Or do you pick some and leave some to collect your own seed? Or do you even keep some carrots purely as ornamentals? Not too many people realise that carrots are biennial. In the first year of growth, they develop the thick roots that we gardeners love to grow and eat. If left alone, carrots will concentrate their growth on leaves, flowers and seeds in the second year. If you prefer not to waste the carrot root, you can still get an attractive houseplant from the leftover carrot tops. This project is ideal for teaching small children about plants and can also create a delicate lacy plant for your home or patio.
